How do you properly retire an American flag?
Every year, we organize our annual Flag Day Flag Exchange event, inviting the community to trade in their worn-out American flags for a fresh new one. But what happens to those retired flags after the exchange? How are they respectfully retired?
How do you properly retire an American flag?
When retiring American flags, it is essential to do so with the utmost respect and dignity, adhering to the guidelines outlined in the U.S. Flag Code.
1. Preparation is key in selecting the right location and creating a solemn atmosphere for the ceremony.
2. The process begins with cutting the flag into pieces, separating the blue field of stars from the stripes.
3. These pieces are then respectfully placed into a fire, ensuring safety and preventing any disrespect to the flag. During the burning, a ceremony is held, which may include reciting the Pledge of Allegiance or singing the national anthem.
4. After the flag is completely burned, the ashes are collected and buried in a dignified manner, honoring the flag’s significance and values throughout the ceremony.
Some organizations may opt for burying the entire flag intact in a respectful manner during flag retirement ceremonies. The key principle remains the same – conducting the retirement with reverence and in adherence to the traditions and guidelines that uphold the flag’s symbolism and importance.
