When we talk about growth in business, it’s essential to dive deeper than just the numbers on a balance sheet.
Think about this: most people look at this comparison photo and have a hard time believing it’s the same kid. This kind of drastic change stems from having a solid game plan and the discipline to stick to it no matter what.
The Apex Predator Mindset
You might have reached a commendable level of success in your business. You’re making a great living, earning respect in your field, and thriving like an apex predator at the top of the food chain.
But do you know the best time to take out an apex predator? Right after it eats.
Picture a crocodile—full, fed, and satisfied. This image serves as a striking analogy for many business owners. When we achieve success, we often become comfortable, maybe even a little lazy. We build thriving businesses, receive accolades, and enjoy nicer homes, extravagant vacations, and luxury cars. It’s easy to think, “I’ve made it! Now I can take my foot off the gas.”
The Dangers of Complacency
But this mindset can be a trap. The prime time for a competitor to overtake you is when you’re feeling comfortable and content. I learned a valuable lesson during my time training in boxing: “Move or die!” A stationary target is much easier to hit. If you want to avoid getting knocked out—figuratively speaking—you need to keep moving.
This lesson resonates deeply in our professional lives. Sure, you could continue at your current pace and maintain a successful career, but is that enough? I believe it’s crucial to keep striving for more. That’s why I actively seek opportunities to learn, read, train, and earn new certifications.
The Enemy of Greatness
As author Jim Collins famously stated, “Good is the mortal enemy of great.” Many businesses settle for being good, and as a result, they never reach their full potential. Most people may look back at the end of their lives and realize they missed out on greatness because they were too comfortable settling for “good.”
Keep Pushing, Keep Growing
The key takeaway here is to never stop pushing yourself and your business. Embrace continuous growth, and don’t let comfort lead you to complacency.
